6 Questions to Ask Your Mold Removal Technician

Checklist of questions to ask your mold removal technician

Home ownership has many benefits. It also has a lot of challenges.

Mold growth is more common than you might think in Connecticut homes, and it isn’t confined to any one season. Because finding mold in your home is just as likely during the humid days of summer as it is following a severe winter storm, knowing what mold looks like (and smells like) is the key to keeping your property intact and your indoor environment safe and healthy.

Call an expert at the first sign of mold

Whether you have found clear evidence of mold growing on your indoor surfaces or you have a nagging suspicion that hidden mold is lurking somewhere inside your home, the smart first step is to call a company that specializes in mold removal and mold remediation. (What’s the difference between the two? Find the answer here.)

With a little due diligence and a peek at their online reviews, you should have no trouble finding a reliable local business that can help you determine whether or not you have mold.

During the initial no-cost assessment, your technician will look for signs of mold throughout your house. If a mold issue is found, they will walk you through what comes next, provide a written cost estimate for their service, and answer any questions you have about the mold remediation process.

6 questions to ask your mold removal technician

As a homeowner, taking time out of your everyday routine to deal with mold or other unexpected problems is never fun. To help you feel more at ease, we recommend putting together a list of questions before your initial assessment so you know exactly what to expect. Make sure your list of questions includes the following.

1. What are the dangers of indoor mold growth?

There is a lot of conflicting information online about the health implications of mold exposure and the many ways mold causes long-term (and costly) damage to your property. A veteran mold removal specialist who lives and works in your area is your best resource for accurate and valid information.

Talking to a local mold removal specialist with experience serving New England homes (especially older homes that are more prone to mold growth) will help you understand more about the scope and severity of your mold problem, as well as how to best protect your family and your investment.

2. Can I remove the mold myself?

In some cases, mold removal can be done by the homeowner without professional assistance. However, that decision should always be left in the hands of an expert.

Once your initial assessment is complete, ask your technician if the problem is something you can take care of yourself with store-bought cleaning and mold removal products; the answer will be determined by the size of the affected area and the type of mold that is growing in your home. If it is a DIY job, your technician will instruct you on which products to buy, how to remediate the mold, and the specific safety gear you will need.

3. What is your mold removal and remediation process?

When choosing the right mold removal company, it is important to have a full understanding of their mold removal and remediation process.

How do they contain the affected area(s) to prevent the spread of mold and keep your family safe? What materials and equipment will they be bringing into your home? Do they use EPA-registered products? How long does the process take? Do they dispose of mold-damaged materials and other large items once the service is complete?

4. Are your technicians properly certified under CT law?

As of October 1, 2026, a new Connecticut law states that all residential mold remediation work must be performed by a certified technician and according to specific standards.

To legally conduct business in the state, mold remediation technicians must be certified by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC), the National Organization of Remediator and Microbial Inspectors (NORMI), or an approved equivalent. In addition, all mold remediation work performed in the state must be in accordance with the ANSI/IICRC S520 standard for professional mold remediation.

While you are verifying their credentials, you may also want to confirm that your technicians are up to date with the most advanced mold remediation tools and technology.

5. Do I have to leave my house?

Your home is the activity hub for your entire family—which means you will need to make a plan if your mold removal service is going to require relocation. This may just mean avoiding certain areas of your home for a few days, but it could also mean that you and your family (and your pets) need to vacate the premises completely. If that is the case, you will need plenty of time to prepare before the service begins.

6. How much will it cost (and does insurance cover it)?

Unplanned expenses go hand in hand with home ownership. However, a little preparation goes a long way toward easing the burden on your wallet.

Talk to your technician about the cost of professional mold removal and remediation, and ask for a breakdown of each part of the service so you know exactly what you are paying for. If a quote seems unusually low in comparison to other quotes you have received, it may be because your technicians are not properly certified, which is illegal. While a cheaper quote may sound great up front, it may affect your standing if you end up having an issue later on.

Your insurance policy will likely cover the cost if the mold growth is the result of a “covered peril” (in most cases a sudden or accidental event, such as flooding from a storm). Make sure your mold removal company has experience working with insurance companies and can provide assistance with handling your claim.
