What Is Black Mold? Is All Black Mold Bad?

Black mold gets a lot of bad press, and understandably so.

Due to the potential negative health effects that may result from exposure to black mold, it is possible for entire buildings to be condemned because of black mold damage—meaning they are considered a threat to public safety and should not be inhabited.

However, not all black mold is that black mold

Read on to better understand what black mold is, how it impacts your health, and what to do if you think you have black mold in your home or commercial business

First, some context.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), there are at least 100,000 species of mold in existence today, about 100 of which are commonly found indoors. Then again, if you ask the National Toxicology Program (a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services), that number is closer to 1.5 million species

Bottom line: There is a ton of mold out there.

And as you may have already guessed, a lot of that mold is black in color. In fact, mold comes in a vast spectrum of colors, as well as shapes and sizes–which means even if you see mold that is black, it may not be the specific type of black mold that has such a bad reputation in the media.

What is black mold?

When you hear people talk about black mold, they are likely talking about toxic black mold, otherwise known as Stachybotrys chartarum. This type of mold thrives in moist, warm environments and will generally appear dark green or black, usually with a slimy texture.

Unlike many other types of mold that carry a musty odor, Stachybotrys chartarum has been described as having an earthy, decaying smell, similar to rotting leaves or vegetation.

Is toxic black mold common indoors?

Actually, no.

Unlike many other mold species commonly spotted indoors, Stachybotrys chartarum is not typically found in homes or businesses unless there is a significant moisture problem that has not been identified or that has gone untreated for an extended period of time. This includes:

  • Heavy water damage from flooding or leaking appliances
  • A buildup of moisture due to poor ventilation
  • Persistent humidity or condensation
  • A combination of any of these factors

Why is toxic black mold bad for my health?

It is important to note here that exposure to mold growth of any kind—regardless of color or appearance—can be harmful to both humans and animals. The most common symptoms of mold exposure include:

  • Allergic reactions (coughing, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes)
  • Respiratory issues (wheezing, trouble breathing)
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue

In the case of Stachybotrys chartarum, toxic compounds released by this type of mold can enter the indoor environment, negatively affecting air quality and causing symptoms that may range from allergic reactions to severe respiratory issues.

While mold symptoms primarily affect people with existing allergies, asthma, or compromised immune systems, it is important to call a professional if you have noticed an uptick in these symptoms and think you might have mold in your home or business.

A mold removal specialist will have the expertise and equipment necessary to properly identify and address your mold problem.

Mold growth indoors is never a good thing.

Black, green, gray, brown, white—whatever color it may be, finding mold growth in your home or business is never a good thing. To ensure the health and safety of your family or your staff members, that mold will need to be removed, and the sooner the better.

Mold grows quickly under the right conditions, often in about 24 to 48 hours. That means if you have just noticed mold growing in your attic, bathroom, kitchen, basement, or any other area of your home, the problem has likely evolved to the point where seeking professional help is a smart idea.

A mold remediation specialist can assess the mold growth area, help you determine what type of mold you have, and develop a plan to remove it and prevent future mold growth.
